Multifaceted Understanding of Health-related Lifestyles of the Urban Low-income Elderly

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the health-related lifestyles of the urban low-income elderly in terms of time, space and experience of everyday life. In two urban communities of Seoul, Korea, qualitative multi-methods were conducted with including 23 semi-structured interviews combined with cognitive mapping and timetabling of the participants¡¯ daily activities. The time use patterns of urban low-income elderly spent the highest percentage of total time for leisure, and the main leisure activity was watching TV at home alone. The living spaces of the urban low-income elderly were within walking distance. Community context and access to neighborhood facilities affected the activities of daily living. The everyday life experiences of urban low-income elderlies were categorized into six overarching themes: ¡®Economic hardship¡¯, ¡®Dependence on public services¡¯, ¡®Need for social support¡¯, ¡®Passive and depressed attitude¡¯, ¡®Gendered mindset¡¯, and ¡®Discrimination and exclusion from the community¡¯. Multi sectoral strategies to create more equitable age-friendly cities should be a core task for active ageing of urban low-income elderlies.
